About

To get this blog rolling I feel it necessary to give somewhat of a statement of intent. Why am I writing this blog, and more importantly, why are you reading it? This blog is, by most definitions, a healthy living blog. I like eating delicious food that is great for my body and I like being active in pretty much any way possible.

About the name; Living the HI Life. For me this name has two meanings. One being the representation of the place, Hawaii (abbreviated HI). I live on the island of Oahu, in the city of Honolulu. This place that I live, work, and play will be a feature of my posts. Because of the wonderful climate I can run outside, go camping, hiking, swimming, and ride my bicycle year round, so you will be seeing some of this…

Another interpretation of the blog’s name is the HIGH life, as in a high standard of living (not as a drug induced high). My high standard of living is not about the amount of money I spend, but the quality of my life. I like eating whole foods that are close to the earth, and the best way to do this is to plant your own produce, which I do on a small scale now. So expect to see some of this…

I also believe that to guarantee the “healthfulness” of your food you should cook it yourself, so expect to see some of this…

I also try to hold my body to a high standard by giving it regular quality exercise. I do this through biking, kayaking, and hiking, and yoga, but recently I have become obsessed with running, so I will also be posting a lot about that, including runs I did, training plans, racing, etc.

So welcome to my blog, and thank you for reading!

Oh my God – I would LOVE to live in Hawaii…I hear the people are relaxed there, the food is fresh and the environment is beautiful! Did you grow up there or moved? Are there a lot of native Hawaiians or others relocated?

What you heard is true, but not totally so. I seek out fresh, local food and the beautiful parts of the island, so that is what you will see portrayed on my blog. I do have to tell you that many people have a strange affinity for spam, white rice, and macaroni salad- strange but true. I grew up in the Chicago area and moved here about 6 years ago. The ethnic population here is made up of about 40% Asian, 30% Caucasian, 15% Pacific Islander and 15% mixed race with Hawaiian.

Just discovered your blog and have loved reading it so far! My boyfriend and I live in Santa Monica, and just got back from a 9 day vacation to Hawaii (Maui and Kauai). We ran, hiked, kayaked, and snorkeled and loved enjoying all that Hawaii had to offer. I have fallen in love with apple bananas and have been incorporating coconut and pineapple into almost everything I eat now! Can’t wait to get back!

Hi Sarah, it sounds like you had a great vacation! Not many people experience the best things about Hawaii when they vacation here, but hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling, especially on Maui and Kauai (love those islands), will give you a good perspective. Can you get apple bananas in California? I love them too, and will probably never eat a Williams again! Thanks for reading, I’ll hop on over to check out your blog too.
