Support Your Local Farmer

July 30, 2011

Happy Saturday!

This morning included a 4 mile run to the farmer’s market at Kapiolani Community College. Tim met me there with shopping bags and coffee :).

There were lots of pretty sights, like hibiscus and orchids.

Avocado, breadfruit, and bananas.

But most important was the produce we bought.

Ok, here goes- kale, young kale, spinach, tat soi, red beets, golden beets, Molokai sweet potatoes, tomatoes, tangerines, papayas, bell peppers, radishes, zucchini, and avocado. All of this (and a little more not pictured) was under $30!

What a beautiful cornucopia of fruits and vegetables. I love buying food straight from the farmers. Fresh local foods picked the day before are so much better than produce shipped half way around the world. If only Hawaii could get it together and start growing more than 10% of the foods we eat. So much fossil fuel wasted and money taken away from the local economy. Local foods, for local consumption is the only way to go if you ask me.

dang stef! you scored at the market. I have been trying to get there the last couple weeks, and have failed miserably. You have just proven to me why I must not fail this Saturday!

The farmer’s have serious deals on beautiful produce, it’s way better than going to the grocery store. I’ll see you there next Saturday!
